PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a telephone set with a handset and accommodating at least one public line, wherein user can freely select a calling route by lifting the handset. SOLUTION: When the user lifts the handset of a master unit in a step S1, the master unit waits for key entries by the user without acquiring the public line, checks whether the public line L1 is selected in a step S2, whether the public line L2 is selected in a step S3, and checks whether an extension is selected in a step S4 are discriminated. When a "key 1" or a "key for selecting the public line L1" is depressed, the master unit discriminates that the public line L1 is selected and proceeds to a step S5 to make a call to the public line L1. When a "key 2" or a "key for selecting the public line L2" is depressed, the master unit discriminates that the public line L2 has been selected and proceeds to a step S6 to make a call to the public line L2. When a "key for calling the extension" is depressed, the master unit discriminates that the extension has been selected and proceeds to a step S7, to place a call to the extension.
