The method involves deriving at least one characteristic based on a signal characterizing the combustion in at least one combustion chamber of the internal combustion engine and using the characteristic to control and/or regulate internal combustion engine operating parameters. The signal is the output signal of at least one infrared sensor detecting the interior of the at least one combustion chamber. An independent claim is also included for an arrangement for implementing the inventive method.
