The device (1) has a scale (3) with a scale pan (4), which is equipped alternatively with a test specimen (2) and a comparison standard (9) of mass. Another scale pan (5) is connected with the scale pan (4), and is arranged at a vertical distance parallel to the scale pan (4). The scale pan (5) is equipped alternately with different substitution weights (10, 11) of mass. The scale pans (4, 5) are equipped with change over contacts (13, 14), which are interconnected to a loader (6). The scale pan (4) is arranged in a vertical direction and is dipped into a liquid medium in a container. An independent claim is also included for a method for identifying volume and density of a test specimen.
