Apparatus for grinding, or grinding and mixing, comprises a vessel 5 containing grinding elements and one or more arms or blades 8 having, or each having, a substantially aerofoil cross-section and rotatable about a shaft 9 with the thin edge leading. The material may be ground dry or in suspension in water or other liquid. After the grinding operation is completed, the vessel may be tilted to empty its contents or be provided with valve means for discharging the suspension while retaining the grinding elements. The grinding elements, which are preferably spherical, may be composed of metal, stone, or hard oxide. Several blade shafts, rotatable in the same direction, may be used in a single vessel.
