PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engine in which environmental performance is further improved by more appropriately controlling a state of multistage fuel injection according to an engine operating condition. SOLUTION: A cooling water circulating system 170 for circulating cooling water of an engine 100 switches between a supply state of cooling water to a cylinder head 110 and a supply state of cooling water to a cylinder block 120 according to an operating state. A signal corresponding to the cooling state of the cylinder head 110 due to the cooling water circulating system 170 is outputted from a cylinder head side cooling water temperature sensor 186. On the basis of the signal, the control part 190 controls the timing/quantity of pilot injection and main injection, a cooling water supply state to an EGR cooler 162 and an execution state of EGR by controlling the operation of a combustion chamber injector 156, EGR passage opening/closing control valve 163 and EGR cooling control valve 179c.
