<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of more correctly detecting the variation in the writing position of an image. <P>SOLUTION: In a printer device 10, a pattern region 30 for detecting a deviation in the sub-scanning direction is formed on the surface of a photoreceptor drum 140, a light quantity sensor 174 detects the reflected light quantity when a laser beam scans the pattern region 30, and the deviation in the sub-scanning direction is detected based on the detected reflected light quantity.
