<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection display device comprising an off-axis optical system which gives a high contrast ratio. <P>SOLUTION: The projection display device 1 is equipped with a reflective liquid crystal light valve 3 having a liquid crystal layer of a vertical alignment mode interposed between a pair of substrates and has a layout of an off-axis optical system in which the optical axis L1 of incident light from a polarized light illumination device 2 to the liquid crystal light valve 3 and the optical axis L2 of reflected light from the liquid crystal light valve 3 to the projection optical system 4 make a predetermined angle. When the incident angle θ of incident light is within a range from 5° to less than 15°, the pretilt angle of liquid crystal molecules is in the range from 1° to less than 10°.
