Oxide mixture (A) comprises a solid solution of aluminum oxide and titanium oxide. An independent claim is included for the preparation of (A) comprising precipitating the hydrated preliminary structure of titanium oxide and aluminum oxide from the aqueous titanium and aluminum-containing solutions without using organic or organometallic compounds, and adding an aqueous titanium-solution slowly to a prepared alkaline aluminum solution under the addition of a base, preferably basic aqueous solution such as lithium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide or ammonia, where the pH is adjusted to 4-8, preferably 6-7.
