The inlay (16) is cast-into the thin wall (14). It is completely surrounded with cast metal. Metal surrounding the inlay has approximately constant thickness. The component is a support or bodywork pillar (10) of the vehicle, formed as a hollow- or box-profile. The thin wall (14) is an outer wall of the component. Outer sides (20, 22) of the thin wall and of the inlay, are mutually- parallel. The inlay is located approximately centrally between external surfaces of the walls, or may be nearer to one than the other. The component is formed as a die casting, by injecting molten metal under pressure into a die-casting mold containing the inlay. The inlay is positioned in the mold in a defined location, so that it becomes surrounded by the die-cast metal. The inlay is provided with spacers for this purpose. It is preheated before casting. The inlay is a sheet metal part or a hollow profile. In a variant implementation, it has an open region which is accessible from outside the thin wall. This region projects at one (or more) end(s) from the die-cast metal. An independent claim IS INCLUDED FOR the corresponding method.
