Cheques 1 advanced edge-on by a pair of spaced endless belts 5 and a pair of nip rollers 8, 9, which buckle the cheques to avoid fouling of stacked cheques which abut a stop plate 21, are engaged by grippers 11 formed integrally with an endless stacking belt 3 and the grippers which are flattened by contact with the foremost stacked cheque advance the cheques against the stop plate 21 which strips the cheques from the grippers. Stripper plate 21 is provided with bent guide lugs to flatten the buckled leading edge of the cheques. To open the grippers the belt 3 is passed over spaced rollers 16 and to promote gripping action an auxiliary endless belt 17 is passed over rollers 18, 23, 24 arranged between respective, spaced rollers 16, 23, 24. Rollers 16, 18 of which the latter is of larger diameter are mounted fast on the driving shaft 15 so that the belt 17 is driven at a relatively higher speed than the belt 3. A stationary guide 10 is provided for delivering of the cheques into the gripper space.</p> |
