<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface light emitting device capable of obtaining uniform surface emission output having a high luminance. <P>SOLUTION: This surface light emitting device has an almost plate-like light guide plate to derive light to its one main surface, a groove part formed on the side of the light guide plate, and a light emitting diode element at least a part of which is inserted in the groove part to emit light in the in-plane direction of the main surface of the light guide plate.
