PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device capable of correctly determining the state of a fluorescent lamp; and to provide a discharge lamp lighting method. SOLUTION: This discharge lamp lighting device 100 is provided with: a microcomputer 6 for inputting a normality/abnormality detection signal 93 from a protection detection circuit 13 in lighting and a filament presence signal 96 from a filament detection circuit 14 to stop the lighting of a lamp when abnormality occurs in at least either of the normality/abnormality detection signal 93 and the filament presence signal 96, checking the filament presence signal 96 from the filament detection circuit 14 after stopping the lighting to determine an abnormal state of the lamp based on the state shown by the filament presence signal 96; and a nonvolatile memory 20 for storing the determined state information 201. The discharge lamp lighting device 100 resets a cumulative lighting time 202 of the lamp based on the state information 201 of the lamp stored in the nonvolatile memory 20.
