PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing apparatus and a control method therefor, whereby information embedded to an original can surely be utilized by contriving embedding the information to image data. SOLUTION: The image processing apparatus in its copy processing detects code data from difference image data corresponding to image data of the original. When the code data are detected and a user desires embedding the code data, the image processing apparatus informs the user about the impossibility of the embedding and terminates the processing, without copying the original. Furthermore, when the image processing apparatus detects an image pattern with a prescribed period, even if no code data are detected from the difference image data, the image processing apparatus informs the user about impossibility of the embedding on the condition that the user desires the embedding of the code data so long as the detected image pattern is not a special pattern for permitting the embedding of the code data, and thereafter the processing is terminated, without copying the original.
