PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent combustion and response from being deteriorated by advance-angle control and in a control device of an engine controllably advancing the opening and closing timings of an intake valve during the transient operation of the engine. SOLUTION: This control device of the engine comprises a combustion state predicting means predicting the combustion state when the opening and closing timings of the intake valve are controllably advanced based on predetermined conditions (S201 to S205) and an advance-angle control prohibiting means (S207) prohibiting the advance-angle control of the opening and closing timings of the intake valve when the deterioration of combustion is predicted by the combustion state predicting means. When the advance-angle control is not appropriate, it is prohibited, and the deterioration of the combustion and response by the advance-angle control can be prevented from occurring.
