PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for easily producing poly-o-methylphenols useful e.g. as a raw material for synthetic resins having high heat-resistance and good moldability such as liquid-crystalline polyester resin, polyarylate resin, polycarbonate resin and epoxy resin and a raw material for highly functional compounds such as liquid crystal display element and photoresist from easily available raw materials on an industrial scale in high purity and yield. SOLUTION: The objective poly-o-methylphenol is produced by (1) reacting a polyphenol with a secondary amine and formaldehyde to obtain a poly(o-aminomethyl)phenol and (2) subjecting the aminomethyl group of the obtained poly(o-aminomethyl)phenol to hydrocracking in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst.
