PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an edge detector, a printer, an edge detection method and a print control method capable of realizing high speed and high accuracy for edge detection. SOLUTION: When an edge sensor 40 detects a platen 53, a terminal A is kept at a high level. When the edge sensor 40 crosses an edge of a paper sheet 5, a step response occurs at the terminal A, and a capacitor C1 extracts the differential component of the step response. The differential component is amplified by an operation amplifier 45a. A comparator 45b generates the detection output if the output of the operation amplifier 45a is larger than the reference voltage Vref2. When the comparator 45b generates the detection output, an FPGA 45c stores the detection output of a linear sensor 75 at the moment, and a CPU 10 reads the detection output of the linear sensor 75 stored in the FPGA 45c, and recognizes the position of the edge of the paper sheet.
