The present invention relates to a method of testing an avian for its predisposition for fishy taint in eggs, comprising analyzing the nucleic acid of a sample comprising the gene encoding flavin-containing monooxygenase 3 (FMO3) or a corresponding mRNA for nucleotide polymorphisms which are linked to said predisposition, wherein a difference from the wild-type FMO3 sequence is indicative of fishy taint. The present invention also relates to a method of testing an avian for its predisposition for fishy taint in eggs comprising testing a sample for the presence or absence of a threonine in position 329 of FMO3, wherein an absence of a threonine in said position is indicative for a predisposition to produce fishy tainted eggs or to pass on to the offspring a gene responsible for developing such a phenotype. Finally, the present invention relates to a kit for the detection of animals having a predisposition for fishy taint in eggs, comprising a nucleic acid molecule of wild-type FMO3 or a fragment thereof, or a nucleic acid molecule differing from wild-type FMO3 by at least one polymorphism of the present invention or a fragment of said nucleic acid molecule, or antibodies specific to FMO3, in one or more container.
|
