There is disclosed a method of manufacturing an alkali storage cell comprising a separator in which a nonwoven fabric composed of fibers consisting essentially of polyolefin resin is treated with a hydrophilizing treatment. The method of the present invention comprises the steps of: treating the nonwoven fabric with a hydrophilizing treatment; and adjusting a thickness of the separator after the step of treating the nonwoven fabric with a hydrophilizing treatment so that an apparent density of the separator represented by the following equation results in not less than 0.40 g/cm<3>. $A\; method\; of\; the\; present\; invention\; makes\; it\; possible\; to\; produce\; a\; separator\; with\; an\; increased\; strength\; and\; excellent\; gas\; permeability,\; and\; thereby\; to\; manufacture\; an\; alkali\; storage\; cell\; with\; a\; low\; short\; circuit\; occurrence\; rate\; and\; reduced\; cell\; internal\; pressure.\; Moreover,\; thickness\; reduction\; of\; the\; separator\; is\; achieved,\; and\; thereby\; it\; is\; made\; possible\; to\; manufacture\; a\; large\; capacity\; alkali\; storage\; cell.$
