Halogen-substituted aromatic compounds are prepared by subjecting aromatic carboxylic halides to thermal decomposition such that carbon monoxide is evolved from a halogeno-carbonyl group and the halogen atom appears as a substituent in the aromatic nucleus. The thermal decomposition can be carried out in the liquid phase or vapour phase, normally at a temperature above 200 DEG C. in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. nickel, palladium, platinum or their compounds. |
