An indicator of the type in which a numeral drum 14, Fig. 2, is carried by a permanent magnet rotor 12 which aligns itself with the resultant field produced by an encapsulated stator 8, is characterized in that it is adapted to be controlled by binary coded signals without the intermediary of a binary-to-decimal code converter. The Specification shows how three pairs of diametrically opposite coils can be interconnected in various ways so as to produce twelve different resultant field positions when energized by combinations of four binary bits. These positions are used for the digits 0 to 9 and for " plus " and " minus " signs. The coils can either be wound on a stator annulus (Fig. 5, not shown) or they can be wound on salient inward extending polepieces (Fig. 11, not shown). The stator could have twelve salient polepieces (Fig. 13, not shown) six not carrying windings and serving merely to concentrate the field. The indicator can be so arranged that the rotor stays in its set position when the control signals are removed, by the use of suitably positioned permanent magnets (Fig. 16, not shown), or it can be arranged that the rotor always returns to its " zero " position when the control signals are removed by means of a magnet 18, Fig. 2. To prevent " sticking " the rotor can be bent. |
