[Also in Division B8] Relates to packaging material having coloured or opaque areas adapted to actuate a photoelectric sensing unit in an automatic packaging machine for controlling operations thereof. According to the invention two or more lengths of packaging material are joined end-to-end to form a long continuous roll, the join being effected by pressure-sensitive adhesive tape having a plurality of alternating light transmitting or transparent portions and opaque portions which are preferably of a brilliant colour. The tape is positioned across the adjacent or overlapping ends of the packaging material so that the transparent portions of the tape are in general longitudinal alignment with the opaque areas of the material and no part of any opaque portion of the tape is in longitudinal alignment with any part of the opaque areas of the material. Thus the tape does not interfere with the operation of the sensing unit and the coloured portions of the tape enable a package formed with the spliced portion of the material to be readily identified for removal. |
