The method involves connecting an accessory device e.g. mobile phone to a hands-free device in the motor vehicle. The characteristics data that is assigned to the mobile phone is stored in a memory unit provided in the motor vehicle. The automatic transmission (AT) global system for mobile communication (GSM) commands (4a-4c) is sent to the mobile phone for reading the characteristics data. An independent claim is also included for error detection assistance apparatus.
