An image pickup device and a control method therefor are provided to accurately perform the notification of dust removal progress conditions to a photographer. A photographing element(15) performs the photoelectric conversion of an object image. An optical element(14) is disposed to be more closely approached to an object in a light receiving part of the photographing element(15). A wiper(27) removes impurity attached on a surface of the optical element(14). An LCD(Liquid Crystal Display)(30) displays impurity removing conditions by the wiper(27) by using an image during the operation of the wiper(27) obtained by the photographing element(15).
