The coefficient of friction of the surface of a natural rubber, polyisoprene, polybutadiene, or butadiene-styrene rubber article is reduced by contacting the surface under substantially anhydrous conditions with gaseous phosphorus pentafluoride or gaseous boron trichloride at a temperature between -30 DEG C. and the degradation temperature of the elastomer. The surface of the article may be washed before or after the treatment. If the article is unvulcanized, the heat treatment can provide the heat required to vulcanize it. |
