Friction material is molded by placing the mixture (12) in a mold (14) and applying a pressure (16) not greater than 6 N/mm2>. Heat is applied in a way to ensure homogeneous cross-linking of the binder. The mixture can be pre-heated before molding to below the cross-linking temperature. Vibration can be applied before and during the molding process. A carrier plate (22) and intermediate layer (32) can be included in the assembly. An independent claim is included for the equipment to apply heat and the required constant or decreasing pressure (24), with an end stop (28) to limit the platen movement to produce the final dimension.
