Continuous esterification of terephthalic acid with 1,4-butanediol comprises reacting terephthalic acid and 1,4-butanediol in two-stage isobaric reaction procedure comprising a first stage in an agitated reaction zone and a second stage in a non-agitated wake zone. Independent claims are included for: (1) a process for the continuous production of polybutylene terephthalate comprising the esterification, precondensation and polycondensation; (2) an esterification reactor for executing the esterification process comprising an agitation tank and a non-agitated wake zone, where the wake zone is arranged as a radially outer-lying circular channel around an agitated internal container; and (3) a device for the production of polybutylene terephthalate comprising at least one of the esterification reactor, at least a precondensation reactor and at least a polycondensation reactor.
