An apparatus and a method for confirming the state of a vehicle using a mobile terminal are provided to enable a mobile terminal, which is located in a shadow area, to obtain vehicle information from an operation information system by using a vehicle information request message. An MPU(Microprocessor Unit) in a mobile terminal checks whether the mobile terminal is connected with an operation information system(201). In case the mobile terminal is connected with the operation information system, the MPU checks whether GPS signals are received through a GPS module(203). If GPS signals are not received, the MPU controls a message creation part to create an operation information request message containing the unique number of the mobile terminal, the unique number of the operation information system, and a vehicle information request(205). Then the MPU transmits the created operation information request message to the operation information system(207). If an operation information response message for the transmitted operation information request message is received(209), the MPU searches an authentication information database to confirm whether the received message is from a communication-authorized system(211). If so, the MPU estimates the operation information of an associated vehicle using the operation information response message, applies it to an electronic map stored in the memory part of the mobile terminal, and displays it(213,215).
