A projection-type image display device and a brightness control method of the image display device are provided to effectively express an image by adjusting a quantity of light emitted from a lamp according to the brightness of the image and a quantity of light actually emitted. A lamp(10) generates light. A light tunnel(11) passes the light generated in the lamp(10). A color wheel(12) divides white light passing through the light tunnel(11) into R, G, and B colors. A condensing lens(13) condenses the light passing through the color wheel(12). A prism(15) reflects the light passing through the condensing lens(13). A DMD(Digital Micro-mirror Device)(14) forms an image by using the light reflected from the prism(15). A projection lens(17) expands the light reflected from the DMD(14) and projects the expanded light on a screen. A light quantity adjusting unit(16) adjusts a quantity of the light projected through the projection lens(17). A light quantity control unit(20) controls the light quantity adjusting unit(16) according to an inputted image signal.
