A rotary to linear transmission comprising first and second drive capstans 2, 3 which are rotatable in unison about a common axis relative to a body member 1, the first capstan 2 having a smaller diameter than the second 3, first and second idler pulleys 5, 8 rotatably supported by a carriage / linkage member 12 and maintained at a particular distance apart, wherein three pulley lines 4, 7, 10 are wound around the drive capstans and the idler pulleys such that rotation of said capstans in unison causes differential winding of said pulley cables and causes relative substantially linear motion between the body and the linkage. The pulley lines may be pretensioned, and may engage helical tracks on the pulleys. The capstans could be rotated by a motor 1. The system aims to replace hydraulic rams in dynamic flight simulators. |
