A method and an apparatus for detecting an OOK(On/Off Keying) signal based on an SNR(Signal to Noise Ratio) in a wireless telecommunications system are provided to maintain requested false alarm probability by setting a threshold value for detecting an OOK symbol regardless of the transmission power of an OOK channel. A receiver for receiving an OOK channel in a wireless telecommunication system includes a receiver input stage processor(202), fingers(204), a symbol coupling and SNR coupler(206), a symbol detector(208), a multi-path searcher(210), a microprocessor(212), and a threshold value calculator(214). The receiver input stage processor(202) includes a receiver antenna, an RF(Radio Frequency) receiving module, and an ADC(Analog to Digital Converter). The receiver input stage processor(202) further includes an LPF(Low Pass Filter) and an interpolator. The receiver input stage processor(202) converts a received RF signal into a digital receiving signal of a base band. The multi-path searcher(210) detects energy of each multi-path of the received signal outputted from the receiver input stage processor(202) to allocate multi-path signals having energy above a predetermined threshold value to the fingers(204) in the order of the magnitude of energy. The fingers(204) perform symbol modulation for each allocated path, and calculate SNRs for each path to transmit the SNRs to the symbol coupling and SNR coupler(206). The symbol coupling and SNR coupler(206) couples symbols for each path to output the coupled symbols to the symbol detector(208), and couples the SNRs for each path to output the coupled SNRs to the threshold value calculator(214). The symbol detector(208) detects an OOK symbol for the coupled symbol by using a threshold value.
