摘要 An image forming apparatus and a method for controlling a charging roll are provided to reduce abrasion of a photoconductor by omitting an additional AC applying process while restraining attachment of a discharge product by optimizing an alternating current bias applied to the photoconductor. A film thickness detector(33) detects thickness of a photosensitive layer of a photoconductive layer of a photoconductor(2) without applying an alternating current component. An environment detector(S) detects an environment. An alternating current component setting unit(35) sets up an alternating current component of bias based on detection results of the film thickness detector and the environment detector. A charging control unit(30) controls a voltage or an electric current to be applied to a charging roll(3) based on a value of the alternating current component set by the alternating current component setting unit.
