An apparatus and a method for discriminating earphone/speaker plugs in a mobile terminal are provided to allow a user to perform call communication by using a speaker inserted in an ear jack and to discriminate an earphone plug and a speaker plug inserted into an ear jack. When a plug is inserted, an ear jack(21) outputs a plug insertion notification signal and inputs/outputs an audio signal with respect to the inserted plug. A controller(22) outputs power, activates an analog-digital conversion enable signal upon receiving the plug insertion notification signal from the ear jack, analog-digital converts a voltage value according to the insertion of the plug, reads it to check a type of the plug inserted in the ear jack, and determines an audio output according to the corresponding plug type. When the analog-digital conversion enable signal is inputted, a plug identification information input unit(23) connects the voltage of the power applied from the controller(22) to its resistor and also connects it to the plug, and applies a voltage divided by the plug and the resistor as a voltage value according to the insertion of the plug to the controller(22).
