An electric furnace and a method for manufacturing an optical fiber preform are provided to make the inert gas flow in one direction by asymmetrically regulating the supply amount of the inert gas, thereby effectively discharging foreign materials. An electric furnace for manufacturing an optical fiber preform is composed of a housing(100) having an inlet port(110) receiving a quartz tube(10), an outlet port(120) discharging the quartz tube, and a gas passage(130) making the inert gas flow into the electric furnace; a heating element(200) covering the quartz tube in the housing, containing the quartz tube, and having a hole(210) for making the purging gas flow into a space where the quartz tube is heated; power flanges(300) installed at both ends of the heating element to heat the heating element with electricity supplied from a power supply source; and a muffle tube(400) installed at the inlet port and the outlet port of the housing and composed of a hollow part to which the quartz tube is inserted, and plural dispersing passages for dispersing the inert gas flowing in through the gas passage. A front end of the muffle tube has a diameter relatively larger than the other part for the progressive direction of the inert gas flowing into the electric furnace.
