The system (1) has an external electronic control unit (4) with control and calculating modules (24, 25), connected to an internal electronic control unit (8), where the module (24) controls the functioning of an internal combustion engine (5) adapted to enslave a filter temperature on a preset temperature profile during combustion pre-regeneration and regeneration phases of a particle filter (2). The module (25) calculates the quantity of destructed particles during the regeneration phase, and calculates a clogging level of the filter representing the quantity of the particles in the filter. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) an external electronic control unit adapted to control combustion pre-regeneration and regeneration phases of a particle filter (2) a method of detecting clogging of a particle filter.
