Apparatus for coating a travelling web, particularly for applying glue to the crests of corrugated cardboard prior to its lamination, comprises an applicator roll 1 partially submerged in a bath of coating material, a doctor roll 2 acting on the applicator roll, and means adjusting the distance between the axes of the rolls to control the transfer of coating material to the web, the adjustment being controlled by comparison of information received from the web speed and the distance between the axes. In operation, the distance between the axes of the rolls is initially set manually to give the preferred transfer of coating material to the web. A tachometric dynamo machine (10), Fig. 2 (not shown), coupled to the shaft of the applicator roll (1) emits a voltage controlled by the speed of the roll and feeds the voltage to an electronic system; a potentiometer (12) controlled by the distance between the axes of rolls (1) and (2) emits a voltage opposed to that of the dynamo machine (10) and feeds the voltage to the same electronic system. The electronic system compares the voltages received and attempts to reduce or eliminate any difference by acting upon a motor (8) which by means of planet gearing (27) and bell cranks (9) adjusts the distance between the axes of the rolls (1) and (2) in accordance with the desired transfer of coating material. The distance is adjusted so that the thickness of the film of coating material on the roll (1) decreases as the speed of the web increases.</p> |
