PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To objectively and quantitatively detect the presence/absence of the fault of a camera (including an optical system) in a system for detecting a camera state. SOLUTION: The system includes: a camera 10 loaded on the rear upper part of a vehicle 200 and provided with a focusing distance fixed optical system for photographing the scene (image) P of surroundings (for instance, the rear part of a vehicle); a BPF 30 for extracting the high frequency components SH of a high space frequency of the image P photographed by the camera 10; an area selection part 61 and an area selection circuit 62 for receiving the input of an instruction for selecting a partial area range p of the image P and selecting the partial area range p; an integration circuit 40 for calculating the integral value∫<SB>p</SB>(SH) of the high frequency components SH for the area range p; and a stain decision circuit 50 for determining the presence of the stain (fault) of the camera 10 or the optical system provided in the camera 10 by comparing the integral value∫<SB>p</SB>(SH) with a reference value K.
