PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a digital camera in which a high-contrast image easy to watch can be displayed with a simple configuration, and an image processing method used therefor. SOLUTION: An AE detection part 58 calculates an AE integration value integrating luminance signals of image data which are imaged by a CCD 46 and subjected to various kinds of image processes, and a gradation conversion part 60 calculates an average luminance value per pixel of the image data and selects a gamma curve having gradation characteristics in which the inclination of a predetermined range including the average luminance value is greater than the inclination outside that predetermined range. The gradation conversion part 60 generates image data for display thereafter by applying gradation conversion to the image data on the basis of the gamma curve.
