A device for trimming the edge of continuously fed strip metal comprises a pivotally mounted plate member 1 over which the strip passes and upon which are mounted two adjustably fixed guide rollers 3, 15 arranged to contact one edge of the strip, a rotary disc-like trimming tool 7, between the fixed rollers 3, 15 and two spring-loaded guide rollers 16, 17 arranged to press against the other edge of the strip to urge the strip against the tool 7 and fixed rollers 3, 15. The tool 7 is mounted with its axis of rotation offset from the plane of the strip so as to be rotated by advance of the strip; the axis of rotation may be inclined to the edge of the strip at other than a right angle in order to chamfer the edge. A similar device of the other hand may follow to trim the other edge (Fig. 3, not shown) and a further device having a tool located between spring loaded rollers at fixed spacing from fixed guide rollers may be used finally to bring the strip to uniform width. In a modification of the device (Fig. 4, not shown) in which both edges of the strip are trimmed simultaneously a second cutter is mounted with and between a pair of guide rolls on a spring-loaded plate on the pivoted plate member. In a second modification (Fig. 5, not shown) two fixed cutters provide for the trimming of both edges simultaneously while also bringing the strip to a uniform width. In a further modification (Fig. 6, not shown) two leading spring loaded guide rollers are geared to move equally and oppositely of the strip to ensure that equal cuts are taken on both edges by a pair of fixed cutters mounted on the pivoted plate.</p> |
