<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To appropriately count the number of desired subjects by designating an area where the desired subject exists. <P>SOLUTION: A camera system selects the area to be identified with the two diagonal points from a fetched subject image by a cursor operation, etc. (S109). An extraction area is detected from the subject image in the area to be identified (S110). The detected extraction area is successively selected (S111) so as to perform the feature extraction processing of a through image in the selected extraction area (S112). So, the featured value by a feature classification held in featured value data is extracted in the selected extraction area. The extracted featured value is compared with a template so as to calculate a similarity degree (S113). It is determined whether or not the similarity degree being the calculated ratio is not less than a prescribed value (S114).
