<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical film that can optically compensate without requiring an alignment layer and that can optically compensate, while reducing the cost by reducing the number of processes. <P>SOLUTION: The optical film has an optical anisotropic layer, containing a pyridinium compound expressed by general Formula (I) on a hydrophilicized surface side of a transparent support. In the Formula, L<SP>1</SP>represents a divalent connecting group; R<SP>1</SP>represents a hydrogen atom or an non-substituted or substituted amino group; Y<SP>1</SP>represents a divalent connecting group, having a five or six-member ring as a partial structure; Z represents a phenyl group, alkyl group, alkynyl group, alkoxy group or the like with substitution of halogen or the like; and X represents an anion.
