PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a position detecting device which is simple in structure and enables detection of the position of a liquid contained in a container, a position detection method, and an analyzer. SOLUTION: The position detecting device, position detection method, and analyzer are for detecting the position of the liquid contained in the container. The position detecting device 25 has a surface acoustic wave device 27 which is arranged touching the container 7, and has a plurality of sound producing portions 27b-27d for generating sound waves by inputting electric energy, a measuring portion 26 for measuring electric characteristics of each sound producing portion based on electric energy reflected from each sound producing portion, and a judgment controller 21c for judging the existence of the liquid at the position of each sound producing portion based on the difference in electric characteristics measured in the measuring portion.
