PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To turn brightness of a display image to a preferable range in an electronic endoscope for forming the spectroscopic image of a prescribed wavelength band from the output image signals of a color imaging element. SOLUTION: The electronic endoscope comprises a light source 14 for making an object to be observed be irradiated with white light, the color imaging element 15 for imaging the object to be observed, a first color conversion circuit 28 for converting Y (luminance) / C (color difference) signals outputted by the element 15 to R, G and B three-color image signals, a spectroscopic image formation circuit 29 for forming the spectroscopic image of the prescribed wavelength band from the R, G and B 3-color image signals, and a second color conversion circuit 31 for converting the R, G and B 3-color image signals carrying the spectroscopic image to the Y/C signals. The electronic endoscope is provided with light quantity adjusting means 14c and 14d for adjusting the light quantity of the white light to irradiate the object to be observed from the light source 14, and a light quantity control circuit 35 for setting the light quantity of the white light within a target range by controlling the light quantity adjusting means 14c and 14d on the basis of luminance information indicated by the Y/C signals outputted by the second color conversion circuit 31.
