<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus designed, such that the number of recording materials that allow automatic setting of appropriate printing conditions can be increased, and to provide a printing control method. <P>SOLUTION: The size of a recording material is determined (S70). Printing is started (S71). An LED201 is emitted (S72), and the reflected light is received by phototransistors 202 and 203. An LED 204 is emitted after the LED 201 is turned off (S75). The quantity of light transmitted through the recording material is received by the phototransistor 202 (S76). After the LED 204 is turned off (S77), an identification table used to identify the recording material for the present printing is determined from the paper size determined in S70 (S78). Based on the table, calculations for comparison with the result of the detection are performed (S79). From the result of the calculations, the type of the recording material is determined (S80).
