PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine capable of miniaturization by devising ways of arranging a variable speed drive mechanism with an electric motor for varying speed. SOLUTION: The internal combustion engine comprises a transmission for varying speed and transmitting power from a crank shaft to an output shaft. The transmission executes varying speed via the variable speed drive mechanism 100 with the drive of the electric motor 130 for varying speed. A power transmitting control means 32 is provided at one end of the crank shaft 11 for controlling the transmission of power from the crank shaft 11 to the transmission, and at least a part of the electric motor 130 for varying speed and the variable speed drive mechanism 100 is arranged outside the power transmitting control means 32.
