摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent visible flicker and occurrence of sticking for a longer period than a conventional apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal apparatus comprises a liquid crystal modulation element 400 including a first electrode 102, a second electrode 105 made of a material different from that of the first electrode 102, a liquid crystal layer 100 disposed between the first electrode and the second electrode, a first alignment film 101a disposed between the first electrode and the liquid crystal layer, and a second alignment film 101b disposed between the second electrode and the liquid crystal layer, and the apparatus displays an image by allowing a light beam to enter the liquid crystal layer from the first electrode side. The apparatus has a control means 204 that controls the potential to be applied to the first electrode and the potential to be applied to the second electrode, the potential periodically changing between positive and negative with respect to the central potential, so as to periodically change the potential into positive and negative to be applied to the liquid crystal layer.
