PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ion generation system capable of setting whatever required balance of generation volumes of positive and negative air ions, or further, preventing a short-circuit current from flowing even if some foreign matters get in touch with a counter electrode, with the use of a simple and low-cost circuit. SOLUTION: A high-voltage electrode 4 out of a discharge electrode pair 2 consisting of a discharge generating electrode 4 and the counter electrode 5 is connected to a high-voltage side end part 8a of the secondary winding 6a of a high-voltage transformer 6 to ground a grounding electrode 5 to a grounding part 11. A low-voltage side end part 8b of the secondary winding 6a is connected to the grounding part 11 through a parallel circuit 10 containing a rectifying element 12 and a resistive element 14. In case a high-voltage electrode of the discharge electrode pair is to be made the counter electrode 5, and a grounding electrode to be made the discharge generating electrode 4, the counter electrode 5 shall be coated with an insulator.
