PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a field sequential image display apparatus that reduces flickers, and to provide a method of driving the same. SOLUTION: The method of driving the field sequential image display apparatus uses a plurality of single color light sources, and includes: a step for dividing one frame of an image signal into fields at least more than the number of single colors of the single color light sources; a step for sequentially displaying the fields on an image display panel; and a step for driving the single light sources independently or in combination with other single light sources in order to supply color light corresponding to the color components of the fields to the image display panel, wherein an average driving frequency of the single color light sources is higher than a frame rate.
