PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform a color reproduction highly precisely in a short processing period of time. SOLUTION: When measuring red, green and blue by sampling the red into A pieces (u<SB>1</SB>to u<SB>A</SB>), the green into B pieces (v<SB>1</SB>to v<SB>B</SB>) and the blue into C pieces (w<SB>1</SB>to 1<SB>C</SB>) to calculate an interpolation formula from obtained A×B×C pieces of three-dimensional (L*, a*, b*) data, A pieces of 3×B×C-dimensional dot sequence data are first subjected to least square approximation with a parameter u to find Mu pieces 3×B×C-dimensional control points, B pieces of 3×B×Mu-dimensional dot sequence data are next subjected to least square approximation with a parameter v to find Mv pieces 3×B×Mu-dimensional control points, and C pieces of 3×Mu×Mv-dimensional dot sequence data are subsequently subjected to least square approximation with a parameter w to find Mw pieces 3×Mu×Mw-dimensional control points. Consequently, output values (L*, a*, b*) to optional input values (red, green and blue) can be obtained by the final three-dimensional Mu×Mv×Mw pieces of control points and the interpolation formula by a basis function used in the least square approximation.
