PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type display device which is switched to be used also as a schaukasten and where luminance in a schaukasten mode is set to be brighter than the maximum luminance in an electronic image display mode. SOLUTION: The projection type display device 50 is equipped with a light source 1, an illumination optical system 2, a polarizing beam splitter 3, a reflection type liquid crystal panel 4, a projection lens 5 and a screen 49. The optical path of illuminating light from the illumination optical system 2 can be switched to two modes by turning the polarizing beam splitter 3. In a display mode, the illuminating light is made incident on the liquid crystal panel 4 through the polarizing beam splitter 3, and reflected light from the liquid crystal panel 4 reaches the screen through the polarizing beam splitter 3 and the projection lens 5.
