PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase sensitivity by further reducing power consumption. SOLUTION: When a heater of a semiconductor gas sensor is driven, the supply of power to the sensor is stopped for a certain value or less, e.g., 150 ms, when a transition is made to a low-temperature state for gas detection, in this case, a period of about 50 to 400 ms (a state in which temperature is maintained at about 100°C at 4.5 mW), after a period of -200 to 0 ms (a state in which heating to about 450°C is effected at 30 mW) has elapsed for precleaning, so that power consumption is reduced by an amount equivalent to that period of time while also providing increased sensitivity.
